Menu of Zotero 7 Beta Version disappears

Hi
I encountered a strange issue recently. I installed (actually unzipped package) several beta versions on my computer running Windows 10 x64, because I have a very large library and the sync space is out of storage, I tried to register two accounts and separate different libraries under them. Recently, when I start zotero, the menu first appears, and then disappears. I tried to unpack a fresh beta version, install the exe beta version. None of them works. This is very inconvenience. Could you please help me to solve it? Thanks a lot for your kind support.

  • I have tried to delete all the unpacked beta zip folders and the items in RegEdit. Then, I unpack a fresh beta release 63. But, when I run zotero.exe, the issue sitll is unsolved, and the same library is the old one before I delete the old unpacked folders.
  • Not sure what you are trying to do (and to show). To be sure, did you read through https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/multiple_profiles?
  • @poettli Thank you very much!!! I did not notice this guide. Just now I followed your link and created a new profile and the the issue has been solved! Does it mean every time when I want to open a different profile I can do this? Now there is only default or the newly created one.

I don't know why the library is not empty. Possible maybe I have created a library under my windows user name before.

Creating multiple free accounts is a violation of our terms of service. You'll need to delete one of them or add a storage subscription.

  • @dstillman understand. actually i only tried once, but it failed. that's to say, the new account has not been used yet. so i will delete the new accounts and only keep the first one. sorry for the uninentional violation.

    Thanks.

I'm not clear on you current question, but a profile is basically a container for settings, and the settings include the Zotero data directory setting from the Advanced settings. As noted on the Multiple Profiles page, it's supposed to automatically create a new data directory when you create a new profile, though that doesn't always happen for some reason we haven't investigated, so you might need to change that setting manually to point to a different data directory that you create.

Multiple profiles are an advanced configuration, though, and not something we generally recommend or can really help with. (It's just a feature we inherit from Firefox.)

You don't need multiple copies of the application files in any case.
  • Get it. I will dig the settings and try to avoid the multi profiles issue. I am still learning how to use this great software. I was once a fan of Endnote, now I have completely moved to Zotero. I guess the disappear of menu may also caused by the third party addons I have installed, but I am not sure the exactly addon may cause it. I will not install any addon any more.
