cant add new citation in google docs

I can add to an existing citation and it will add the new superscript number and will add to the citation list at the bottom of my document, but if I write a new sentence and then try to add a citation to that sentence, the superscript wont pop up, but it still adds to the citation list at the bottom. any ideas on what to do?
