@mention not working in private group library

I've been trying unsuccessfully for an entire day to @mention another user of a private group library. I wanted to avoid opening up a new forum post and tried searching in general across the entire forum for issues with @ tagging other users in any discussion but could not find a single post with a similar issue.

Am I missing something super obvious in plain html syntax to tag other users? When I try the @mention in general discussion posts and preview it, whatever I put after the @ gets hyperlinked (red color coded) but obviously I did not want to use the forum to test whether a user gets mentioned successfully.

After the @ I do not get any autocomplete options if I start typing anything. I tried some other combinations with <>! etc. but those made no difference. I noticed that in some forum posts the @ mention is consistently unsuccessful for e.g. here with user sseyler whereas user Rintze is consistently successful in mentioning others. I assume I am making a similar mistake but cannot figure it out through inspect element - the successful @mention has code which has an a href html profile link but surely one does not have to get a profile link and enter that in the comment (incidentally I tried also entering the @user as a link in the comment but that seemed the wrong way too and did not work).

I'm now also confused between the difference between the layout options for composing when it is a group discussion - there are RTF icon options to enter a (hyper)link etc. whereas here in the forum discussion compose, I had to use html code and preview to make sure the link is properly embedded.
