Is it possible to sync manually imported PDFs?

Dear Zotero community,

I have 2 computers and want to sync Zotero items including PDF attachments. On computer 1 (Ubuntu, Zotero 6.0.27), I manually imported PDFs that I already had stored on my computer, let's say in "/my/dir/1", "/my/dir/2" etc. The Zotero item has synced, but not the PDF. If I try to open the PDF on computer 2 (MacOS, Zotero 6.0.30), I get a File Not Found error ("the attached file could not be found at the following path: /my/dir/1/file.pdf"). Also, the PDF files are not available in the web library.
While if I use Zotero's web extension on computer 1, the PDF is stored in "../Zotero/storage/XXX/file.pdf", and syncing works correctly.

What I would like to do, is to have Zotero copy the files on computer 1 from their original paths to "../Zotero/storage/XXX/" such that syncing works, but I can't figure out how. I've searched the online docs and forum but I don't see an option to create a sync-able version of manually imported PDFs? Any suggestions are much appreciated, thank you!
  • It sounds like the PDF files that are not syncing are linked PDFs (not files in Zotero storage under Zotero\storage). The differences between the two ways of storing PDF attachment files is outlined here:
    https://www.zotero.org/support/attaching_files#stored_files_and_linked_files
The difference has nothing to do with being 'manually imported'. You can manually import PDFs as either stored files or linked files (either by drag and drop or by right-click Add Attachment).

Zotero does not sync linked attachment files online, as they can be anywhere on your computer - that is your responsibility (eg by keeping the linked PDFs in a cloud-mirrored folder).

If you want to move linked files into local Zotero storage so that Zotero can sync them online (up to your online storage quota), use Tools\Manage Attachments\Convert Linked Files to Stored Files.

  • Aah right I see! Amazing, yes that worked! Thanks so much!
