Citation does not stop in Libre Office

Maybe this is a question for Libre Office user groups or maybe I am at the right spot. When inserting a citation from Zotero in Libre Office sometimes the citation does not "stop". I have the field shadings active in Libre Office so every inserted citation is marked greyed. Sometimes when I continue writing after inserting the citatin the grey mark is following all the text. When hovering with the mouse over the grey text ALL of the text is a citation with a link to the inserted one. This is clearly not how it is supposed to be. Does anybody have any ideas on this?
I am on Mac, latest OS on everything.
Settings in Zotero document options is "reference mark" and "update auto".
Thanks for any help, much appreciated.

  • What is the version of LibreOffice? This bug is supposed to have been fixed in version 7.6.0:

  • Hi @poettli, I have 7.6.4.1.

Strange. I also have 7.6.4.1 on macOS 14.2.1 and I don't see what you are describing. Inserting a citation (using either the red citation dialog or the classic citation dialog) then continue to type just works as expected. I only can the issue after I deliberately placed the cursor just at the end of a citation. Then in that case it could be an LO bug. Let's see if others report the same behavior.

Edit: I tried with both Zotero 6.0.30 and Zotero 7 beta 56, and it works fine.
  • Thanks for fast response! It is still there. Entering a cite, pressing space just extends the grey area that bounds the citation. Read somewhere that "bookmarks" in settings might help? Very frustrating, it has worked fine before and suddenly. The only thing I can think of that is different is that I have a lot of open pdf´s windows in Zotero.

  • Do you see this in an already existing document? Do you also see this in a brand new document?
  • This issue is in an existing document. But; I created a new document and entered some citations. Works correctly but the field shadings look different. Checking the Zotero preferences for that document it has "bookmarks" instead of "reference"
  • Create a new document in LibreOffice, attempt to cite with Zotero, and when prompted for document preferences, make sure you select the option to store Zotero citations as Reference Marks. Do you still see it there?

Generally this only happens if you inserted a reference, then pressed Space and Backspace (to remove the inserted space), after which the Reference Mark would expand with typed text.

@poettli Unfortunately the bugfix for Reference Marks expanding had to be reverted due to it breaking some other functionality. See https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=81720#c47

Interesting. But it's still a better situation than before 7.6.0, as I can write text right after the citation, either with bookmarks or reference marks. Thanks for sharing the information.
  • It's never been the case that if you inserted a citation in LibreOffice and continued typing that the ReferenceMark would immediately expand. You had to somehow move the cursor forwards and back (e.g. by typing a Space and then deleting it).

I remember having to deal with that problem without touching the cursor in previous version of LO. But this is another discussion
