Merging Zotero accounts

Hi. I originally started my Zotero account while in grad school with my university email. I then created a new Zotero account using my work email and was able to share my library with the two accounts. I am attempting to manage my desktop Zotero groups (university account) with my web version (work account) and cannot. Can I sync my two accounts somehow?
  • The normal approach here would be to just change the email address rather than create a second account, but it sounds like that's too late and you've done a fair amount of work in the new account?

And does the old account just have groups or does it also have items in My Library-- groups you can just transfer. My Library requires export/import.
  • My desktop account (university) contains 100% of My Library, and one Group that I am the owner of. The web version (work account) contains only part of My Library contents and 3 Groups, one that I am the owner of. Is there a way to change the email address for my university account and share the Groups that my work account has?

    Thanks for your help!
  • Are you able to login your university account still, i.e. do you remember your password? If so, you can change the email address there, yes (first add it, then set it as primary email). You won't be able to use the exact same email that you're using for your second account though.
  • I can no longer access my student account (this is why this is so complicated for me). Can I export my university library to my work library? I think from there I can re-create the Group that my university account contains and then manage it from the work account.

Again, thank you so much for your help!
  • Yeah, you can export your library to Zotero RDF and should be able to import nearly losslessly. Connections to citations in documents in which you have used Zotero will be broken, though.
  • Hi Adam,

Thanks for your help. Can you walk me through importing the RDF file, please?
  • Sorry never pressed post here:
    1. Use "Export Library" in the "File" menu to export your library and tell Zotero to include notes and files
    2. Make sure you have a good back-up of your database.
3 Import the exported file into the new group using "Import" from the File menu
