"zotero could not load the component necessary to communicate with your word" error
Re: Report ID 1881414768
Error: "Zotero could not load the component necessary to communicate with your word processor. Go to Tools → Add-ons → Extensions in Zotero and make sure that the extension for your word processor is enabled."
Hi,
I'm getting the above error when trying to add a reference in Word. It was working fine before I updated Zotero. It's a work computer that's fairly locked down, so I had to get our IT department to deploy the update. Presumably something has gone wrong there.
When I go to Preferences>Cite>Word Processors, I don't see any options except "Use classic Add Citation dialog".
Following the instructions in another forum post, I tried moving extensions.json to the desktop, but this had no impact, so I moved it back in to the Zotero Profiles folder.
Hmm, I just realised the error above doesn't refer to Preferences>Cite>Word Processors. I definitely had that error at some point, but now it seems to have changed to the one quoted. When I go to Tools>Add-ons, it just says "You don't have any add-ons of this type installed" and clicking Extensions doesn't change anything.
Any help appreciated. I don't have admin privileges on this computer, so I might have to ask for assistance from our IT people, but that will be forthcoming.
Kind regards,
Rob

If so, you should try 1) restarting your computer and 2) if that doesn't help, reinstalling Zotero. (Your data won't be affected.) In Zotero 6, you should see plugins for Word and LibreOffice in Tools → Add-ons. If you're not seeing them, there's something strange going on with your installation.
I talked to IT and they made it possible to uninstall Zotero, so I did that, restarted the computer, then reinstalled Zotero and restarted the computer and I'm still getting the error, unfortunately. I also still have empty Add-ons manager and nothing under Preferences>Cite>Word Processors.
However, my colleague in IT is not able to replicate the error installing for the first time on his test machine, so it seems as if a clean installation works. I'm all synched up, so there's no problem with deleting my library on this device (I assume). Maybe I need a cleaner uninstall?
You can, however, try in a new Zotero profile. If it doesn't happen in that, there's some problem in your original profile, and we can debug that.
