best practice: Groups VS private collection

Hi,

I'm trying to find a way to collaborate with others in a Public Group, while still having control over my entries. Ideally (I think), it would look like this: I add entry X to my library and drag/drop it to a Public Group. My peers join that Public Group and add entries Y, Z etc. Then, PDF files and notes are attached x, y, z.

Now I have my entry X in my own collection as well as in the Public Group. Inside the group, it might get a valuable PDF file x or a note y attached, so I might want to take it over to my collection, while not overwriting my notes or other details, as those might be private.

The first problem is, I discovered that I cannot drag and drop an item back from a group to my own collection, unless I completely delete it first. Second problem: I can only drop the item into another one of my collections, where something strange happens: it is actually copied from the item I already have, not from the one I dragged.

So, I'm wondering what everyone else does. Do you give up private collections in favor of Groups? Is there a way of maintaining both? Am I doing it wrong?

Thanks!
  • I found some additional info like http://www.zotero.org/support/storage_faq, and that WebDAV for Groups is not on the horizon, and that indexed PDF in Groups is not possible, and this http://forums.zotero.org/discussion/8980/groups-impossible-to-move-a-collection-to-a-group-library/ .

I think this points towards the strategy of always maintaining two versions of bib entries, one private and one public, and to avoid drag&drop.
