Zotero causing chrome to crash when highlighting text

My Chrome keeps consistently crashing when I highlight or copy text. I have deleted and re-installed Zotero and the same with the extension and it hasn't fixed the issue. I have also deleted and re-installed Google Chrome.
  • I'm not sure why you think this has anything to do with Zotero?

Unless the problem goes away if you disable the Zotero Connector and comes back if you re-enable it, and you can repeat that over and over, it's not related to us.
  • I think it has something to do with Zotero as the problem goes away when the Zotero connector is disabled.

Could this be because my Zotero File Storage is full? Edit- I've freed up storage and chrome is still crashing when highlighting/copying text with Zotero enabled.
  • No, nothing to do with Zotero Storage, and again, almost certainly not related to Zotero at all.

Disabling Zotero Connector isn't sufficient for testing this. As I say, you would have disable Zotero Connector, confirm that the problem has gone away, re-enable Zotero Connector, confirm that the problem has come back, and be able to do that over and over, reliably.

And even then, it would be a bug in Chrome, not the Zotero Connector. A browser crash is by definition a browser bug, not a problem in a browser extension — browser extensions themselves can't cause crashes, even if they trigger them. You should make sure you're running the latest version of Chrome and your OS.

If you can reliably reproduce a crash only when the Zotero Connector is enabled, we'd want to know that so we could report it to Google, but that's it.

I have done all of that? This has been happening for weeks. Chrome works when Zotero is not connected.

I’m running the latest version of Chrome and OS. I have looked at all the advice from Chrome which says it might be due to an extension and in my case, it’s Zotero.

I don’t know how you want me to ‘reliably’ produce this. As I’ve said, I’ve tried and Chrome only crashes with Zotero enabled. I.E problem goes away when it’s disabled, comes back when it’s enabled and I’ve done this many many times.
  • Can you make a screen recording of this debugging process — the problem occurring with the Zotero Connector enabled, it not occurring when disabled, and occurring again when re-enabled — and email it to support@zotero.org with a link to this thread? Since no one else has ever reported anything like this, we'll need that to report this to Google.

What OS, and what exact versions of Chrome and your OS are you running? Can you get a crash report from the operating system?

I'm not sure what you're referring to, but no official advice from Google would say that a browser extension can cause an actual browser crash. Again, that's definitionally not possible. A Chrome crash is a Chrome bug, no matter how it's triggered.
  • Also, does this happen if you disable all other browser extensions?
  • Yes, I will get a recording.

I’m on a MacBook Air. OS version 14.2.1 (Build 23C71). macOS Sonoma 14.2.1. My chrome is version 120.0.6099.216 (Official Build) (x86_64).
I can get a crash report and I’ve been sending them all to Apple.

Yes this happens when I disable all other extensions, I’ve deleted them all except Zotero.
  • Unfortunately sending a crash report to Apple doesn't do much, but you can find a Chrome crash report in the Console app (findable via Spotlight) and send that along to us as well.
