disable ResearchGate Link

How can I disable Zotero from creating an item called ResearchGate Link when importing pdfs from ResearchGate? I have 'automatically take snapshots' disabled.

You can't without modifying the javascript that performs the RG import (https://www.zotero.org/support/dev/translators/coding ).
Attached links aren't snapshots -- they don't take up any space, FWIW.

(Note that you can delete these all at once if you want by searching for "ResearchGate Link", clicking in the items list, and pressing Ctrl/Cmd-A to select all search results.)
