Google Doc collaboration: how avoid unlinked references?

Hi,
I am collaborating with several persons and want to minimize chances that citations become unlinked. This happened multiple times before and rarely could I figure out the cause.

Could it be that the co-authors also need a synchronized version of my library?

The two causes listed there (not having the browser connector installed or drag&drop for cut&paste) are the only ones we're aware of. A synced library should not be necessary, no.
