Help! Getting repeated references in bibliography, also can not find citation to edit

Hi,
So, I realised that some citations seemed to be duplicated, for example Dita et al 2018a then Dita et al 2018b, all of which are one paper. I looked for the duplicates and could not find them, I decided to delete any trace of the paper, and tried importing it again, it became worse now Dita et al, 2018c! When I try to add an in text citation, it shows Zotero still has the deleted files (even removed from bin!). How do I resolve this?
Then the other issue is I wanted to edit a file (journal article) so that its correctly referenced, but I cannot find it in my library!

Help, where else are these documents hidden? Thank you!

The citations are still in the document somewhere. If this is Word, toggling Word field codes can help you find them. You'll want to delete all the existing citations for this source and replace them with citations from the same item in your library.
When I try to add an in text citation, it shows Zotero still has the deleted files (even removed from bin!).
It's likely just showing you that the citations are in the document — in the "Cited" section of the citation-dialog search results. This has nothing to do with what's in Zotero itself, and deleting things from Zotero would just make it worse by creating orphaned citations in your document.
  • Thank you dstillan. I did delete all the file sources in Zotero library. Yes, I do see them in 'cited', how can I remove them from there?
  • Again, the citations are in your document — at this point, this isn't about what's in your Zotero library.
  • dstillman, you are a life saver! thank you!
