Documentation for iOS app

edited December 24, 2023
Just discovered the iOS app. I’ve installed it, but have no idea how to go about adding items to my database. Also, more basically, how to get the iOS app synced with the desktop app. So I have access to my already existing database.

Documentation like that available for the desktop version would be greatly appreciated. Maybe it already exist?

Thank you.
  • Something approximating this for the desktop version: https://www.zotero.org/support/

There's no documentation for the iOS app because there's not much to document.

The description in the App Store tells you how to save:
Save journal articles, newspaper articles, books, webpages, and more via the Share button in Safari and other apps
This works almost identically to saving to the desktop app using the Zotero Connector.

You can also use any of the options in the + menu in the app, which also have parallels to the desktop app (e.g., Add Item by Identifier).

If you're using the app, you're already syncing. You'd of course have to set up syncing in the desktop app so that your data is actually in your online library.
  • Thanks. I looked for a “save the Zotero” on the share, button, but didn’t find it. And I don’t find it now. Not even in the options for customizing the options presented by the share button.

I’ll check into setting up syncing on my notebook. Perhaps that will activate Zotero on the save button.

    Thanks again.
  • I have syncing of desktop and iOS. Still nothing on the Safari share button.
  • It’s just choosing Zotero as the app to share to, the same way you would choose Messages or Mail.
  • Zotero does not appear as an option to share to when the share button is tapped.
  • If the app is installed, it should appear in the horizontal list of apps or in the menu after clicking "More". If you're not seeing it, 1) restart your device and/or 2) make sure you're running the latest version of iOS — the Share menu was buggy in older versions and sometimes didn't show all available apps.
  • I had checked in “More” for it but had not thought to check the horizontal list of apps. After restarting, there it was, in the horizontal list of apps.

    So thanks.
  • ("More" is part of the horizontal row of apps — that lets you configure which apps show up if the ones you want aren't shown automatically. There's an "Edit Actions…" at the bottom of the share sheet, but that's different.)
