Open a PDF with Zotero when Zotero is not the default PDF reader

I'm running Zotero 6.0.30

I notice that when Zotero is not set as the default PDF reader, there does not seem to be any way to open a PDF file in Zotero itself: having it set as the default is the only way.

Am I missing some obivous thing I should be doing? I usually navigate around 50 % of the time on either Zotero or other pdf readers.
  • You mean when opening files from within Zotero, right?

There's only that setting, but if it's 50%, leave Zotero as the default and use right-click → Show File to open in an external reader. There's a third-party plugin to add an option to open in an external reader, but that's not a built-in feature due to the warning given there.
  • Thank you! This third-party plugin is exactly what I was looking for. As I don't use the annotation functions of Zotero, I can use it without fear
