Time to Refresh Zotero's UI for a Better User Experience

Hi everyone,

I've been a long-time user of Zotero and it's been a game-changer for managing my research. But, have you guys felt that the UI(for Windows) could use a bit of a facelift?

Modernizing the Look: Zotero's functionality is top-notch, but its visual design seems a bit dated. A more modern, minimalist UI could make the experience more enjoyable and less cluttered.

Improving Navigation: Navigating through Zotero can sometimes feel unintuitive. Streamlining the menus and perhaps introducing a more responsive design could go a long way in improving efficiency.

Enhanced Customization: We all work differently, and having the ability to customize the layout to suit our individual workflows(add theme) could be a huge plus.

I'm curious to hear your thoughts and any other suggestions you might have. Also, does anyone know if there are plans for a UI update anytime soon?

Cheers!

Zhiwei
  • I don't know anything about timing, but yes, Zotero has hired UI people and there are going to be relvant updates -- you can e.g. look at the web library for a sense of how an updated look will likely feel.

My sense would be that customization is less of an unqualified good and would be more likely to happen via add-ons that already do a fair amount of that.
  • I wonder, what is the definition of minimalist UI?
I'm asking because to me, the current UI is pretty minimalist, considering all the functions available in the program. (Unless the goal is to hide most functions behind like 32 layers of menus and submenus? - ok that is perhaps a bit over the top. I just kinda genuinely don't understand what is so complicated about the style of UI used in the current program.)

Though I prefer the looks of the standalone, I think the web library is quite neat! (although I do hope that there would be some option to adjust padding xD)

Sorry if thit came off as provocative/negative! Not my intention.
  • If you look at the website, it's mainly about modernizing the look&feel, not actually about a minimalist interface in terms of exposed functionality. (Obviously the web app just *has* less functionality, so it suggests a general design approach, not a templatengor the desktop)

Zotero created zbib.org for an actual minimalist app
