Using Zotero w/ Scrivener (Princeton Library work around)

Hello all -

I am using Windows 10 version of both Zotero & Scrivener, and I am unable to make the work around from Princeton that is highly recommended by everyone to work. My problem is that I am unable to get the "Scannable Cite" export to appear in my dropdown menu for the Export tab in Zotero preferences even after following all the instructions (three times through now from start to finish).

https://libguides.princeton.edu/c.php?g=148292&p=5241020

Is it case of that this method from Princeton only works on Mac OS? Are there any suggestions for work arounds for Zotero and Scrivener on Windows? I'll be happy if it is even something manual like typing "{AUTHOR ; YEAR}" into the body of the text that will then be automatically picked up by Zotero when the Scrivener manuscript has been exported as Word.

Grateful to any and all advice.

Best,

Philip

    See ...
    http://zotero-odf-scan.github.io/zotero-odf-scan/
"Additional step: Currently, the automated installation of the Scannable Cite translator is broken. To manually install the translator, download the Scannable Cite translator (right-click on the link and use "Save link as") and place the downloaded file "Scannable Cite.js" in the Zotero data directory. Scannable Cite will appear as a translator after restarting Zotero."

That instruction is incomplete, in that it states that Scannable Cite.js should be placed in the Zotero data directory. In fact it must be saved to the Zotero\translators directory.

  • Thanks Tim. I don't have a "translators" folder in my Zotero directory and I've checked the other folders too in case it is nested. Should I create the folder? Well, I'll do that now and see what happens
  • That didn't work...

Works for me in Windows 10. Make sure you are looking in the right place to put the file. You can find the Zotero data folder by going to Edit\Preferences\Advanced\Files&Folders - Show Data Directory. You should have about 6 folders in the folder, one of which should be \translators. The file, which must be called Scannable Cite.js, goes in that folder. Then restart Zotero. Then when I go to Edit\Preferences\Export - Item Format, I see Scannable Cite in the list.

  • Hi Tim - I completely uninstalled Zotero, including preferences, from my machine and then reinstalled and got all the folders in the right places, and the work around from Princeton is working! Much appreciated for your time and help.
