Any way to make the Connector icon remain a big red Z?

Pretty much as the title says. Is there any way to do this? I have quite a few extension icons pinned on Chrome. Many that are similar to the various bland icons Zotero displays for different page types. I constantly get lost and muddled while looking for the correct icon to click to save a page.

The big red Z that appears when a blank New Tab is displayed would be soooooooo much easier for me to find and click if it was displayed permanently.

Or perhaps a compromise where the icons Zotero Connector usually displays have a red Z in the corner or something? I know Zotero is open source, so I'd happily create them if it's something that's possible to implement.

If this is the wrong place to ask/suggest this, I'm sorry! I'm just so tired of getting lost trying to save something and I don't know what to do.
  • It's not goting to stay the same icon for sure (the icons convey relevant information), but I do think there are plans to integrate some Zotero branding into them, yes.
Note that the button functionality is accessible via keyboard shortcuts -- for me, the default shortcut (ctrl+shift+s on Windows) doesn't work anywhere, but you can customize these from your browser's extension menu.
  • Oh I understand why they change, I just wish there was an option to turn it off.

Still, keyboard shortcut is a good workaround. Thanks!
  • Please explain why you prefer not knowing the item type. I might genuinely find that perspective useful.

I find it valuable to know what publication type the publisher has labeled an item. The distinctions between report, thesis, and book section (for example) are really important when it is necessary to edit the incompletely supplied metadata.
  • The point is not that they don't want to know the item type but that they don't hugely care about it before saving (it's shown during import anyway) and want the save to Zotero icon to be more recognizable and stable -- this isn't the first time someone asks about this.
  • @adamsmith Yeah, I understand. Sometimes the type icon can be rather subtle. Still, I prefer knowing what type the publisher has classified the item.
  • @MuddledLohse: not a very "clean" way, but you can find the extension folder in your chrome configurations, then go to "image" folder, delete all the files that begin with "treeitem" (or better, save them in a separate folder). Then you duplicate the big Z (zotero-new-16px) and rename it following the default icon which in my case was the one for webpages : "treeitem-webpage-gray@2x".

Not sure how this will end when an update comes, but for now it works, I also got tired of searching the icon because some of them are too close to other's on my extension bar.
