Why do citations not number properly when I add them?
I have been using Zotero for many years using Word on Windows.
I have spent a full day try to solve the problem that when I add a new citation (which I need to because I am responding to manuscript referees), Zotero assigns it a number (I am using the 'Nature' format) that is *not* consecutive with the preceding citation. In other words, the citation is given the number '58' when it should be '47', as it is the 47th citation in the document. I have tried everything to correct this problem, and see no option but deleting all the citations and starting over. I have found no thread on the web that addresses this particular issue.

flymanUnfortunately none of those solutions help, and none on the scenarios at the start of the suggested link describe my problem. My bibliography contains all my citations, all my citations are active (I delete and then regenerate the entire bibliography with all citations listed), and the my citations using a numeric style (Nature) do not restart at '1' anywhere. The problem is that when I add a new citation in the middle of the document, it is assigned a number appropriate for a citation inserted at the end of the document, i.e. it is recognized and added to biography, but not given the correct number for its position in the citation sequence.

dstillmanAssuming you can't reproduce this in a new document, see Troubleshooting Errors in Word Processor Documents. You should also send us a document except that triggers this, as requested there.
