is there a way to shorten the citation if the length of the author is greater than 7 characters, so that only the first 7 are taking?

You actually mean characters, yes? So Durkheim would be Durkhei? If so, that's not possible, no. If that's not what you mean, could you provide an example?

That is what I meant...well it is good to know it won't work as I spent a bunch of time trying to get it to work :)
