Installing Globally in Linux

Hi all.

I'm using Ff 3.5.7 and trying to do a global install of Zotero Beta and its OOo integration in Debian-based Linux.

You may or may not be aware that -install-global-extension and -install-global-theme have been removed from Gecko 1.9.2 and upwards, see https://developer.mozilla.org/En/Command_Line_Options#Add-ons and https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=396510

I've tried placing them in /usr/lib/firefox-addons/extensions in their appropriately named folders (per the <em:id> in the install.rdf) and they do not get detected.
  • This is a Firefox question, not a Zotero question.
  • Not really. I can follow the procedure I just outlined with other extensions; not Zotero.
  • There's nothing unique about Zotero, so we wouldn't have an answer for you here.
  • I have ubuntu, with the OOo plugin and I'm using version 2 rc. I 'm not sure what is meant by a global install, but it's all working fine for me... why not use a group to share citations online?
  • Hi Aaron. A global install means that it is installed by default for every user. There is no need for the user to install anything in this way.

@uberstudent: Where would zotero.sqlite be located in that case?
  • I believe uberstudent is referring to installing Zotero as an add-on for all users of a machine (as part of his project to create a preconfigured Ubuntu remix for students). The zotero.sqlite file and other supporting files would be created by Zotero in each user's Firefox profile when the user first runs Firefox. The users would not share a common zotero.sqlite, but the add-on code itself would be shared (i.e., not installed by each user separately).

@uberstudent: If you install Zotero globally, is it still possible for users to update it? There's enough in flux with Zotero that I certainly would want to be able to update it frequently.
  • I'm learning interesting things here...
