Help! Messed up the code in APA 7

Hi everyone,

A very beginner user here. I had an issue with the order of references in parentheses. If there are multiple references, Zotero orders the citations in alphabetical order. I wanted to keep the order that I originally inputted my references in (usually by year, but sometimes also per relevance to the text, etc.)

Based on the instructions I read online, I tried to modify the code and delete a chunk of text between and .
However, I must have deleted a wrong part of the code, as now the issue still persists - but now my bibliography is all jumbled up and not ordered alpabetically!

Please note that I tried to create my own reference style and only modify that, but it did not seem to "download" into the styles list. Therefore, I edited the APA 7 style directly, and this thing happened.

I'm not sure how to redeem the situation. Perhaps if someone could post the whole, functioning code here, I could copypaste that into the APA 7 style editor and then restore normalcy?

Thanks in advance,

Newbie
  • You can just remove the APA style in the styles tab of your preferences and re-install the style from zotero.org/styles

    Thank you! That's helpful!
The bibliography now looks right. However, the references within the text are still organised alphabetically, not chronologically.
How can I change this? Thank you.
  • Hi again

Another modification that would work well would be to "never sort" the references. I've always input the references in the order I want them.
Is this somehow possible to change within the APA?
    Thank you.
  • APA sorts the citations for you. If you delete lines 1644-49 completely, it will not sort them for you and Zotero will leave the order of the citations as you entered them.
  • (Though do note that the APA manual is very clear that you should sort citations as you sort the bibliography, i.e. alphabetically first)

Thank you so much both. I am now trying to do this (even if I know it goes against APA guidelines). Having some trouble navigating to lines 1644-1649. Sorry, but do you know the exact text I should remove?

Currently I get an error message saying that it is not proper XML when I try to delete what I think is on lines 1644-1649.

The "sort" section that lives within "citation". At the bottom of the style (after all the macros, before the "bibliography" section).
