Cannot delete highlighting when text is PDF link

I have highlighted text in a PDF that I added with the Zotero highlight tool. The text that is highlighted is also a a PDF link to a reference in the bibliography. Normally when I right click on highlighted text it gives a list of color options and a delete option. There is no delete option in this case. So, I cannot remove the highlighting. I tried right clicking while holding down various keys (shift, cmd, control, option).

    I discovered you can delete it but you have to very precisely right-click on the very edge of the annotated text so as not to trigger the link.
