Can't update Zotero

I have Zotero on my Mac, but for several years I've been unable to update it. For a while, the program would just look for new updates without ever finding one. But now when I try to update I get an error message saying "Update XML file malformed (200)."

The program is now losing a lot of functionality (e.g. it frequently crashes), I imagine because it's such an old version (it says version 4.0.22). I could try manually downloading an update, but I want to make sure that this doesn't cause me to lose the files and notes saved on my old version, since I have years of work saved on there. I would be very grateful if anyone could give me advice about how to proceed. Many thanks!
  • Oh wow. So that version is nine years old, from September 2014. I'm not sure why that has never updated for you, or where it's even trying to get updates from now.

What version of macOS are you running this on?

As long as you're running macOS 10.11 or later, you should be able to just download the current version of Zotero (6.0.26) from the download page. We obviously don't do a lot of testing of updates from decade-old versions, and you definitely can't sync using that version, so for good measure, you should make sure you have a backup of your Zotero data directory (or just a current Time Machine backup of your computer).

If you're not running 10.11 (which would explain why you haven't received updates), you'll need to update to 10.11 first. All Macs running 10.9 or 10.10 can be updated to 10.11. Zotero 7, currently in beta, will require 10.12 or later.
  • OK, thanks! I am running a recent version of MacOS (Ventura 13.4.1) but was previously using an older computer so maybe that explains the problem. Anyway, I just downloaded the new version and it seems to be working! (And it did keep all my data so I didn't even need to use a backup. Anyway, thanks again!!
