Error in Word 2016

Hello, I am contacting you to ask for an advice how to deal with the problem of the malfunctioning of the zotero. I started using zotero yesterday and an update took place. I have a problem with citations and bibliography creation now. Below I am sending some messages which I got from the zotero error window.

[JavaScript Error: "Integration.Session.editBibliography: called without loaded citations" {file: "chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/integration.js" line: 2328}]
[JavaScript Warning: "Unknown property ‘user-select’. Declaration dropped." {file: "resource://zotero/note-editor/editor.css" line: 1}]
[JavaScript Warning: "Error in parsing value for ‘word-break’. Declaration dropped." {file: "resource://zotero/note-editor/editor.css" line: 1}]
[JavaScript Error: "Integration.Session.editBibliography: called without loaded citations" {file: "chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/integration.js" line: 2328}]

The document is new, empty. The citation does map, but the clipboard is empty. It does not create a bibliography.
I have updated Word (ver. 16), reinstalled zotero and plugins. It still doesn't work. I found a couple of references to error messages in the discussion forum, but they are unresolved.
I have the citation database linked to its own directory.
Please advise me how to proceed. Thank you for your help.
Sincerely, Jan
  • Please submit a Report ID. Are you using the Zotero tab in Word or have you set up custom buttons for Zotero in Word's quick access area?
  • Report ID is 289931360. I use Zotero tab.
  • The citation does map, but the clipboard is empty
    What do you mean here?

Can you describe in detail what you're doing in a new document?
  • Hello,
I.e. the quote is highlighted in grey, but if you do "display field codes" it's blank. In older functional documents there was a hyperlink to the data of that citation.
I have sent an pokus.docx file to support.
    Regards
    Jan
  • Does it work if you use a default citation style like Chicago?
  • Yes, it works for Chicago style, but I had to create a completely new file. I found that zotero starts to crash when inserting a particular quote, it already works for other styles.
I exported the quote to an rdf file. The file contains a character that do not exist in code page 1252. Even though I replaced this character in the txt editor and imported the quote into zotero, zotero crashes. Can I send this to you for support?
  • other quotes don't work
that have special characters e.g. č
  • Submit a Report ID after reproducing the error in a new document.
  • This happens in a new document with Chicago style? Are you using the footnote style or author-date? What's the full version number of Word that you are running? Have you customized your Normal template in Word?
  • Yes, also in the new documentary with Chicago style.
Word: Microsoft® Word for Microsoft 365 MSO (version 2307 Build 16.0.16626.20170) 32-bit version
No, I didn't customize the Normal template in Word, or I didn't consciously do it
  • Try resetting the Normal.dotm file.

Did citing with Zotero work well for you before? Do you have other Word extensions installed? Can you try disabling them?
  • I tried, but it didn't help
yes, it worked fine for me before

I disabled the COM extensions, but it didn't help
  • Did you restart Word after disabling other extensions? Did you install any of these before the last time Zotero worked for you?
  • yes, it was also restarted, I also created a new normal.dotm
No, I didn't install anything new
my wife has version 6.0.23 and there it goes
clearly the problem is in the encoding, records that do not contain special characters do not do the problem
  • clearly the problem is in the encoding, records that do not contain special characters do not do the problem
Yes, citations that use special characters or formatting require a more complicated process to insert, but there is no bug in Zotero. Usually these types of errors are caused by user configuration.

Do you run any proprietary security software? Can you try disabling it temporarily? Can you create a new windows user account and see if it works there?
  • Hello, I have tried a number of options, although I don't know how to disable antivirus for example (company computer), but nothing has helped. Apparently the problem is only local on my windovs. Thank you for the advice. Alternatively, do you have any other tip besides reinstalling windovs? Could I detect settings in the registries that zotero uses? My global windovs encoding setting (via PowerShell) is 1250 (CodePage).
  • This is certainly not caused by Zotero settings. It's either Word settings or some system-wide configuration. Testing in a new Windows user account would be the simplest next troubleshooting step, if you haven't tried it yet. If it doesn't work (or you cannot create another account due to administrative policies on this computer), then it's not necessary, that a Windows reinstall will help either, since it's possible that the error is caused by the way your company setup the computer. You could ask your IT to test Zotero on another company computer.

Otherwise there's also an option of writing with LibreOffice or Google Docs.
