Accidentally deleted a folder need to recover on MAC

I am on a MAC
I tried to follow directions in another post but it was just too confusing. I am not very good about stuff like this.
I did all the steps until I got located the zotero.sqlite (dated today 842023)
on my computer.
other folders in there are zotero.sqlite.1.bak (dated today 822023) and zoterosqlite.bak (dated today 843023, yesterday)

Now I am lost. I tried to copy the zotero.sqlite and had to choose an app so I went with Word. Now I have long list that has all kinds of stuff listed-I suppose I don't need this IDK
I am not syncing
I have done nothing else since this happen except close zotero
There is a storage folder (dated today 842023) that has a long list of folders in there with dates and weird titles.

I tried to answer your list of questions from the other posting
I guess my current data directory is in the default location-not sure what you mean my home folder.
But I tried to do the least possible when setting it up and using it, so I am sure I did not move it from where it went after I downloaded it. It is in my application folder.

I did try to look in the trash so opened zotero again but only see a blank grey screen. Hope I did not do anything to damage it. I just closed it again.

Please don't just send me a link to some article-that kind of thing does not help me. I need a step by step directions without a lot of stuff that has nothing to do with me. I may have a PhD and an MA but that does not mean I know much about computers as that was not my major. Just to let you know. I feel dumb. Oh well :-) If you don't ask you don't find out anything.

I do have one general question about Zotero
Someone told me there was a limit to 50 folders and I am not sure what they meant. Was no one from Zotero.
Is that true? This is very important b/c I use it for work and I really like it too. I wish I had it when I did my dissertation.

Thank you so much!

That's not how this works. We write our documentation extremely precisely based on years of helping people here, and we link to relevant sections so we can give the clearest directions when people are facing the same issue. It's not in anyone's interest for someone to rewrite directions in some ad hoc manner for you.

These are the step-by-step directions you need to follow, which explain exactly how to recover from this and restore a collection:

    https://www.zotero.org/support/zotero_data#restoring_from_the_last_automatic_backup

If you're having trouble at a specific point, quote the part you don't understand and explain exactly how you're confused.

An upcoming version of Zotero will make it possible to restore collections from the trash, but I promise you these steps work (but you have to do them before your automatic backups become too old).

    No, that's totally made up.

  • I get too confused with all the stuff that does not apply to me. I am sorry I am just overwhelmed.

Would it be too much for you to at least put a * on the ones you think apply to me?

  • They’re step-by-step instructions. You just need to follow them. If you’re having trouble with this, you should ask someone to help you follow them in person, but there’s really nothing else we can do here. Those are the steps.

Just to be clear, you shouldn't be deleting any files beginning with zotero.sqlite. Make sure you have backup copies in another folder of all of them that were in your data directory originally. You don't want to accidentally delete your entire library. (And once you've resolved this, I would strongly recommend using syncing going forward so that you have an online backup of your library.)
