Integrate with other system

Hi, I am working for an organisation and we are exploring the possibility of integrating a reference management software to our document management system. It would be best if we can make use of your functionality and interface to easily cite by entering DOI/ISBN and also create a linkage with our documents. Is there an existing API/embedding function available? Thanks!
  • Hi, thank you for your reply. I also found the link for API, apologies I should be more specific!
My idea is similar to the discussion below:
    https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/comment/431306#Comment_431306
and likewise, ideally we would be able to do the citation within the same page, not pop up another page.

My another question would be can we have an account for a system instead of individual users? Do you know if there is any similar use case?

    Thank you!
  • I think you're a bit confused here — you're talking about the web API, you linked to a thread about embedding ZoteroBib (a completely separate, lightweight, account-less tool for one-off bibliography generation), and you posted to a five-year-old thread about automating enterprise installs of the Zotero desktop app. Those things don't have the slightest thing to do with one another. I deleted your other comment in the enterprise thread, which is absolutely not what you're asking about. Let's keep any discussion in this thread.

I'd encourage you to spend some time familiarizing yourself with Zotero and how different parts work and coming back with a clearer articulation of your requirements.
  • Hi, sorry it all sounds confusing. I totally understand that ZoteroBib and Zotero are different solutions, I am looking for both front-end and back-end integration here (if that makes sense).

Front-end: that's the embedding ZoteroBib part - I am just wondering if it is possible to embed it to our document management system? What we want is simply for user to easily create a bibliography entry, which I think ZoteroBib is fantastic
Back-end: that's the API part so that our document management system can 'talk' to Zotero and create a 'linkage' between the document and the bibliographic record

My third question relating to the enterprise use, yes I think I misunderstood that thread, I am not looking for enterprise installation. Rather, I wanted to ask if there is similar use case of an enterprise usage (a enterprise used reference management) instead of individual use?

I hope I have explained myself better, thanks!
  • ZoteroBib doesn't have any connection to the Zotero desktop app or Zotero accounts. It's just the browser-local bibliography tool you see on that site — it's mostly meant for younger students who don't need to build up a reference library. It's open-source, so you can customize it if you want.

The Zotero web API is documented, and you can share that with your IT department. If they have specific questions about the API after reading through the documentation, they can ask on zotero-dev.

I just don't think we're going to be able to help you much beyond that, and you're not really asking any specific questions that we could answer. Zotero is used in major enterprises and governments throughout the world. Almost everything we produce is open-source, and you can customize it how you want, but you'd obviously have to implement any custom solutions on your end.
  • Thank you very much!
