Footnote numbers off when delete reference

I've been editing a report and noticed that when I delete text with an associate reference, although the reference is deleted, the subsequent footnote numbers don't update. I'm using Zotero 2.0 beta, Mac Snow Leopard, Word 08 for Mac and the Chicago Manual of Style Note with Bibliography. I have tried refresh and saving the document, which doesn't seem to help. My reference notes do contain some custom edits.
  • Are you using fields or bookmarks mode in the (Zotero plugin) Document Preferences window? Are you sure you've completely deleted the citations?

Have you tried this in a new document?
  • I'm using fields. Pasting into a new document doesn't seem to fix the issue. How can I be sure that I've completely deleted the citations?
  • Fields have a shaded gray background, but you can also highlight a section and control-click. If a citation exists, Toggle Field Codes should be an option in the context menu, and after toggling the codes any remaining fields should be expanded to show the underlying code, which should make them more visible.
  • I think the deleted references are completely deleted. I don't see any evidence of blank fields. BTW, I didn't see the toggle field codes option, even for the references/fields that are present. Where do I find the context menu? I didn't see it by control clicking, or under the apple scripts menu with the other Zotero commands.
  • The "context menu" is the drop-down menu that shows up when you control-click (or right-click), with Cut/Copy/Paste/etc.
  • Hmm, yes, no toggle field option is visible in the context menu. Although I do see it coming up for cross-references I created for tables and figures, which you would think would behave in exactly the same way. Any other thoughts? Thanks for your suggestions.

Wait—could you explain exactly what you're doing? If you're using a footnote style, you should only need to delete the footnote number in the document to delete the associated footnote, and the other footnotes should update accordingly. The numbering of footnotes is done by Word and doesn't have anything to do with Zotero.

Please include exact steps to reproduce.
  • Must be a problem with Word then. I delete the footnote number in the document, but the other footnotes are NOT updating accordingly. Oh dear. I guess I'll poke around Word's help/support.
  • Ah, turns out it was a track changes issue w/ Word. When I accepted all changes, then footnotes renumbered themselves correctly. Problem solved.
