Database file can't be updated?

Hi. Recently I haven't been able to launch Zotero on my Mac (the web library is working just fine). I get the following message:

Error: Error(s) encountered during statement execution: unable to open database file [QUERY: DELETE FROM itemTypesCombined] [PARAMS: ] [ERROR: unable to open database file]
Zotero.DBConnection.prototype.queryAsync@chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/db.js:680:13
From previous event:
ZoteroService@file:///Applications/Zotero.app/Contents/Resources/components/zotero-service.js:347:7
@chrome://zotero/content/include.js:4:14

This same pop-up box asks me to search for updates, and since there seem to be none (at least to this specific problem whose nature I haven't figured out), Zotero just automatically closes instead. What's going on?

    unable to open database file
    Zotero can't open the zotero.sqlite file in the Zotero data directory, likely due to file permissions or security software (or perhaps related to this being on a network/external drive).

    On a Mac this would be most likely to happen if moving files from another computer manually without using Migration Assistant.
