Edinting Style: Differentiating between editor of an edited volume and editor of a classical text

edited June 1, 2023
Dear all,
I am modifying Oxford style. I want the term "in" appear before names of the editors of collected volumes, but not editors of classical texts. For example, this is correct:

(a) Assmann, Aleida, ‘Canon and Archive’, in Astrid Erll and Ansgar Nünning (eds), Cultural Memory Studies: An International and Interdisciplinary Handbook (Berlin & New York: De Gruyter, 2008), 97–108.

but this one (b) is wrong:

(b) Yāqūt, Muʿjam al-udabāʾ, in Iḥsān ʿAbbās (ed.), 7 vols. (Beirut: Dār al-Gharb al-Islāmī, 1414).

I want citation b one to appear like this:

(c) Yāqūt, Muʿjam al-udabāʾ, ed. Iḥsān ʿAbbās, 7 vols (Beirut: Dār al-Gharb al-Islāmī, 1414).

Could someone please help me with editing the XML code below? I suppose this is the right section? Any suggestion is welcome.

  • Please someone help.
  • The section you posted doesn't include the "in" at all. The general idea would be to distinguish between how editors are handled for a book (editor of a classical text, without "in") and for a chapter (with in). You can look at any number of styles that make that difference as a template

    There is an "in " above. Will post in a comment below.

    I have tried a range of styles and spent some time. The problem for me, perhaps like other novices, is the terminology too. I am not sure whether the code should come under container contributor or editor-translator. Currently, I am lost and would appreciate any example of code that could help me to make this distinction.

    To make it clear, I have modified the Oxford style, which doesn't have the following format for editors of volume: Author, Title, (in D. Smith and K. Kenneth (eds.), Title of the Edited Volume. So, I have changed it so that the editors come before the title of the volume with the "in" before them. The problem is that the style then applies this to the editors of all other books, including editions of classical works.

    I really appreciate your help, adamsmith. I appreciate that this is time-consuming for you. Thank you for the heads up in advance.
  • For some reason the comment doesn't show, so I am gonna write it without the tags.

    names variable="editor translator" delimiter=", " prefix="in "
    name and="text" et-al-min="6" initialize="false"
  • Which Oxford style exactly? There's a dozen or so with "Oxford" in the title and none exactly called "Oxford"
  • Sorry, I was misled by "Supplemented by Oxford Style Manual". The actual style is the one called "Modern Humanities Research Association 3rd edition (note with bibliography)"

    For example it has this:

    Savant, Sarah Bowen, ‘People Versus Books’, in Non Sola Scriptura, ed. by Bruce Fudge, Kambiz Ghanea-Bassiri, Christian Lange, and Sarah Bowen Savant (London: Routledge, 2022) <DOI: 10.4324/9781003252221-18.

    In my edited style, I have like this, which works for me, but then it uses the same style for edited classical texts.

    Sarah Bowen Savant, ‘People Versus Books’, in Bruce Fudge, Kambiz Ghanea-Bassiri, Christian Lange, and Sarah Bowen Savant (eds), Non Sola Scriptura (London: Routledge, 2022), DOI: 10.4324/9781003252221-18.

    Now, here is an example of what it gives me for a classical text:

    Yāqūt, Muʿjam al-udabāʾ, in Iḥsān ʿAbbās (ed.), 7 vols. (Beirut: Dār al-Gharb al-Islāmī, 1414). (this is how my edited style does).

    Yāqūt, Muʿjam al-udabāʾ, ed. by Iḥsān ʿAbbās, 7 vols (Beirut: Dār al-Gharb al-Islāmī, 1414). (this is by Modern Humanities Research Association 3rd edition).

    WHAT I WANT:

    Yāqūt, Muʿjam al-udabāʾ, ed. Iḥsān ʿAbbās, 7 vols (Beirut: Dār al-Gharb al-Islāmī, 1414). (this is how my edited style does).

    Thank you so much!
  • The original MHRA style renders the in like this:

    <choose>
    <if type="chapter paper-conference" match="any">
    <text term="in" suffix=" "/>
    </if>
    </choose>

    You should keep that logic and just move that whole block in the position you want it. (FWIW, in the logic of the style, Fudge et al would be 'container-contributors' and Abbā would be a 'secondary-contributor' but I'm not even sure you need that distinction.)
  • This worked perfectly thank you so much.
