My new Windows 11 computer won't allow installation of Zotero

Hi there,
I bought a new laptop so that I could install and use the desktop application because the laptop I normally use is a work device and won't let me install my own software. Imagine my dismay this evening when after downloading Zotero, windows wouldn't let me install it. I got a message saying that "For security and performance Windows 10 (this bit is a bit confusing as I have Windows 11) in S-mode runs Microsoft verified applications". In other words, if its not in the Microsoft Store, then its not safe and I would need to disable the S-mode in order to install it - which would make my computer vulnerable to viruses.

Might there be a Windows approved version of Zotero in the pipeline or is there a workaround?

That message isn't saying it's "not safe" — it's just saying that the version of Windows you have is configured not to allow apps from other sources. Zotero is obviously safe to use. We have no plans to make it available via the Microsoft Store.

This page explains how to switch out of S mode (which it sounds like you can only do once, permanently):

Thanks for getting back to me about this and confirming that it isn't just my computer being a bit weird. I guess I was concerned about switching out of S-mode as it might mean I'll have to start purchasing anti-virus software.
