Order of in-text references with a suffix (the same author(s) in the same year) using APA 7th
When multiple references by the same author in the same year are cited between brackets in an in-text citation using APA 7th edition style, the order of the references is not alphabetical, but seems to be chronological.
For example, when I have 4 references by John Smith in 2012, they automatically get assigned an a to d, and this is based on the alphabetical order of the titles of the references, not on appearance in the text. But when they are all cited together, they are ordered based on appearance in text instead of alphabetically.
Here is my example:
The first mention of John Smith gets the suffix c (Smith, 2012c), which makes sense because the titles are alphabetically ordered. The second John Smith gets the suffix d (Smith, 2012d). There are 2 almost identical references, first (Smith, 2012a) and second (Smith, 2012b), also ordered correctly. But when they are all cited between the same brackets (Smith, 2012c, 2012d, 2012b, 2012a), they are sorted according to chronological appearance, instead of alphabetical (or even alphabetical suffixes).
Does anyone have any advice on this issue?
