Help needed: PDFs are not saved locally anymore

Hi everyone,
I am part of many shared libraries but since a few weeks my articles saved as PDFs (sychronized online) are not accessible anymore via my desktop Zotero client (Mac OS). When I check the folder in which the PDF is supposed to be saved, it is empty. When I check online the PDF still exists and can be opened.

I believe that this happened because I was late in renewing my Zotero storage subscription. Any ideas how I can download the files again to their respective folders, so that I can access them again (from my desktop client)? It's probably more than 1000 files - so I don't want to do this manually.

I hope there is an easy answer that I was just not able to find. I also did not find another thread on the topic (probably due to my lack of searching skills). So please feel free to just connect me to a previous answer, if there is one.

Thank you again so much for your help! Zotero makes my life so much easier and I always introduce it to our PhDs.

All the best,
Bec

Local files don't just disappear, and letting your storage expire would never affect your local files. Most likely you never had the files on this computer before. (It's that or you deleted them from outside Zotero.)

As for downloading them now, from the sound of it, you may have just disabled file syncing in the Sync pane of the preferences. With file syncing enabled, double-clicking a file that's missing locally but exists online will always download the file.

In any case, see Files Not Syncing to debug this.
  • Hi Dstillman,
Thank you a lot for your quick response. That's very helpful and helps me to narrow down the problem.

It was actually a sync problem for most of the files.
Yet, there are still some for which it does not work (but that's a small number - maybe corrupted files). I will investigate it further and worst case, just download and connect them again. If it is anything systematic, I will be in touch again.

All the best and thank you a lot for helping me!
    Bec
