Sync error on iPad

Heya,

Having this error recently: Invalid sortIndex '00008|000000|-0005'
This is happening only on my iPad (8th gen, 16.4.1) and I've confirmed the files I added on my laptop are also showing in the online library. I've updated the app and restarted the iPad, but problem persists. I'm at a loss.

Debug ID: D2000428437
  • [ERROR] Zotero(+0000022): SubmitUpdateSyncAction: failures - [Zotero.FailedUpdateResponse(key: Optional("FZYU8B2D"), code: 400, message: "Invalid sortIndex \'00008|000000|-0005\'")]
If you paste FZYU8B2D into the search bar, does an item show up?

(You have a PDF annotation with an invalid internal value. We'll look into how that happened, but in terms of finding it in the meantime, I'm not sure if we match parent items when searching for an annotation item key.)
  • Nope that doesn’t find anything. It’s not only one file that’s missing, though, it’s several. On my iPhone they’re all synced, so it’s really just the iPad that doesn’t sync them… I added a new file today which does sync, but those several from like a week ago don’t :/

The error is from an annotation that you added on this device that's not uploading.

Actually, though, we can tell the parent attachment — it's E3PLQJN4. It's an annotation you added in January beginning with "Tip" on page 9. We'll look into how this happened, but if you delete that annotation, the sync should go through.
  • That’s so weird, things have synced since January so I did not expect that… I’ve now deleted the file completely (didn’t need it anymore anyway) but it still won’t sync - any more steps I should be taking?
  • What do you mean by won't sync? If you mean you're still getting the same error, you need to delete the item from the trash.
  • I emptied the trash as soon as I deleted it, I don’t get the error anymore (thank you!) but I still only see 5 files in the specific folder I’m talking about - there should be 10, so the iPad is still not syncing?
  • It's syncing, but it's possible that there was some sync bug in the past that prevented some items or some item changes from being downloaded. See Changes Not Syncing for how to work through sync problems — basically, we can only debug a change that you can capture not syncing, so you'd have to trigger a change to those items (e.g., adding the items to a temporary collection) and see if they synced then.
  • Okay that’s strange, that seems to be working (although one by one, like, one didn’t trigger all missing items to appear, but definitely better than nothing).
Thank you SO much! I thought I was going mad

There was a bug a few months ago that caused some changes on iOS to be missed during syncs. It may have been that. Any further changes you make to those objects should cause them to sync now.

Let us know if you see any missed updates going forward (after fixing any existing ones).
