I annotated a pdf with about 270 pages (no OCR). Now the pdf is only loaded without the annotations. Are the annotations possibly in a file and can I link them back to the pdf?
You're on zotero.org -- click on "Web Library" at the top and navigate to the item that has the PDF attached (assuming, that is, you have synced, but I'm guessing dstillman checked that was the case)
Hello dstillman, did you mean this link: -> https://www.zotero.org/birger71/items/HQRDWVED/attachment/UZKK3R7I/library Unfortunately I can't "open" anything here. My problem was/is: until recently I opened the pdf and made annotations there. With each new opening, these annotations and the "yellow borders" were all visible. But one day not anymore...
This is your library, and we can't help you find your own data, but I assure you there's no problem in Zotero here. You appear to have three copies of that file, and you just need to open the one you were actually annotating before.
Hello dstillman! First of all I would like to thank you for your support. I thought to myself that the notes must be "somewhere", because I could transfer them to obisidian. Unfortunately, these are "detached" from my pdf document. But could it also be because my storage capacity (according to zotero > 300 MB) is fully utilized?
All you have to do is open the correct PDF in your Zotero library. Paste XB2KX24E into the search bar in All Fields & Tags mode if you can’t find it, but I really can’t help you further with this.
Sorry. I probably didn't explain it properly: I first worked and commented on the book "Ulrich Hutten: ein Lebensbild". Then it happened that I could no longer load the pdf document. I then - to be on the safe side - created the book again ("Ulrich Hutten: ein Lebensbild (ab p. 74)" and continued to work there with my comments. However, it remains the case that I can (in the meantime) open the pdf document from the original book again, but all notes and markings have disappeared.
Hello Dstillman, I'm now uncomfortable that I'm causing so much work... After all, you are so kind and have been taking care of my request for days. It seems, however, that I am not able to describe my disorder correctly. Also, the file you named only refers to the "second book" (meaning the same book, but stored as a new version), which I created because the pdf of the "first book" no longer contained any of my comments and markings.
I don't know what else I can say here. You have two files with annotations, graeter12.pdf and graeter1988a.pdf, the first with annotations created on April 5 covering pages 1–59 and the second with annotations from April 16 covering pages 59–97.
You can paste XP945XP4 and XB2KX24E into the search bar to find the specific PDFs in question.
Note that 8F64WPPY, which I gave you above, is the parent item of the former, but that item has a whole bunch of child attachments, so you can't just double-click on the parent item — you may have to open a specific attachment to see the one with annotations.
XP945XP4 is a linked file and therefore isn't accessible in the iOS app. You'll only be able to open it in the desktop app unless you convert it to a stored file like the other one via Tools → Manage Attachments.
Once again, thank you very much for your support! When I type XP945XP4 in the desktop app, I don't get a search result. The Tools → Manage Attachments is unfortunately "ghosted", so I can't select it.
Hi Dstillman, I'm not a "computer expert", but your instructions are still understandable to me. However, these are not feasible here. - It remains the case that I made annotations and markups in a document and that (without me having changed anything) this document was no longer "loaded". Maybe the file was too big; I can't say... I don't want to cause you any further effort, but the fact remains that from my point of view, safe working with Zotero is not possible. Nevertheless, thank you for your support!

I have no idea what you mean by this. You named a specific book, and I told you the two specific PDFs in your library that have still annotations for the first 97 pages of that book. I don't know why you're not engaging with that. If you're having trouble understanding my instructions, you should ask someone you know to help you go through them, but based on the information you yourself have provided, you don't appear to have lost any data here.
Also, to clarify, you won't be able to view the PDF at the link above, since it's a linked file that only exists on your computer. But that will show you the attachment item in question, which absolutely still exists in your library and still has annotations for pages 1–59. You just need to find that same attachment in your local Zotero library and open it.
Hi Dstillman, all is well. I understand your instructions really well. However, I don't see these files in my desktop app (I work exclusively in this one). I would like to send a screenshot of this. Since that doesn't work, we probably won't get any further here... Nevertheless, thank you very much for your efforts.

You should also be able to see it online at this URL:

It's just one of the child attachments of 8F64WPPY.
