You appear to somehow have at least two saved searches with empty names. I'm not sure how you created those — possibly via some plugin? Do you see them in the user interface?

before i update the plugins include：Zotero IF Pro Max/ Green Frog /Zotero Style/Zotero PDF Translate/Zotero Reference，the sync worked well. After i updated them, it seems the sync started not working. i don't know why and what i can do. I tried to disable all the plugins, it still not ok.

You didn't answer my question, though. Do you see two saved searches without names within your personal library in the collections list?

i checked my library and i saw two purple folders without names, now the sync works well! thanks! you are great! @dstillman

Yeah，it's the one of the plugin called"zotero citation" https://github.com/muisedestiny/zotero-citation#readme
The author declared the possible disfunction on Mac, because the author don't have device based on Mac Os. So when i dragged the article into word to cite, a purple citation folder was created. I think that is the reason folders without names were created, and sync stopped.

OK, if you can reproduce this you should report it to the plugin developer.

We'll also make sure Zotero properly blocks searches without names from being created, which shouldn't be allowed to begin with.

Ok. The developer don't have a mac. What a pity! It works well on a Windows PC. I think zotero could improve the citation part to make it more simple and quicker.

Zotero actually does have a check to prevent searches names from being saved, so I'm not sure how these are being created. It looks like the plugin names the search based on the document.

Can you provide exact steps to reproduce this, from creating a new document through ending up with a search without a name?

This plugin allows me to directly drag references from my library to Word as citations. Afterwards, a folder will be automatically created in my library and the citations in the Word document will be stored in that folder. This feature is very useful in the Windows system, but not very compatible with Mac，which is the folder without name.

I'm asking for the exact Steps to Reproduce the problem, not a general description of the feature.

This is likely a bug in the plugin, but I'd like to figure out how exactly it's happening so that Zotero can prevent these saved searches (not collections) from being created — it'd be better for the plugin to fail with an error than for syncing to be broken later.

1. Start Zotero.
2. In My Library, drag the a Item to Word.
3. A new purple folder without name include the item is automatically created.
4. Click on “Sync” in the right abve pane.
5. error "Search name cannot be empty" show up.

The steps need to include starting a new document in Word. Does this only happen with unsaved documents? Are you setting a filename?

it's not a new document. it'a document with an accurate name. At first the automatically created folder name was empty. the sync could not work. I edited the folder to give it a name, the sync works well. i think it just the plugin is not very compatible with Mac.

I understand that, but I'm asking you to try to reproduce this from scratch — this is just how debugging works. We need you to work with us to do that so that others don't encounter this problem, whether or not the plugin developer fixes the bug on their end.

Can you reproduce this with a brand new document, and if so what are the exact steps to do so?

i created a new document, the same error showed again. the i restarted Zotero, and the folder without name disappeared. The developer said the folder is a one-time folder, when u restart Zotero , the folder will disappear. But i restarted Zotero several times when i first encountered this error.

I can reproduce with this step on a Mac

1. Create a new Word document called "Doc1.docx"
2. Insert a few citations in this document
3. In zotero, a saved search appears with the "Word" icon
4. This saved search has no title (so it doesn't take the title of the document), is searching in My Library, matching "all" the following, "Title" "contains" blank
5. Throws the error "Search name cannot be empty"
6. Closing and reopening zotero, the saved search is still here, showing the complete My Libary, because of the conditions described below. Had to be removed manually.

It is the same with an unsaved Word document.

OK, thanks. This is a bug in the plugin that the developer should fix right away, but I've added an additional check for the next version of Zotero to block broken searches from being created. With the extra check in place, users of the plugin will get saved searches with random names (coming from the plugin) every time they use the word processor plugin in a new document, and those searches won't be deleted automatically, but syncing won't break.

Existing searches without names will need to be deleted manually.
