[Feature Request] Bookshelf simulation

This might seem awkward a priori, though I think it could end up being really useful for us researchers using Zotero.
I've been using Zotero for a long time, and I basically don't have any physical books anymore. However, I realise that I did lose something: the serendipity of randomly looking at a bookshelf and, by facing a random book lateral, remembering its contents and applying them in my research.
So, the idea would be simple: based on ISBN/DOI information, retrieve book covers from some free web services and create an alternative simulated "bookshelf interface" for Zotero. One could keep this interface open in a second monitor, or even use it as a background in Zoom sessions XD.
  • This sounds like a simple and good idea, hope the developers queue it soon!

    @AlonsodeAndrade

    A partial solution is provided by the Zotero-pdf-preview plugin

    https://github.com/windingwind

    It provides the cover of items with preview of pages if needed (you can adjust the number of preview pages to 1 to show the cover only and reduce any excessive use of RAM). It works only with Zotero 6 and not Zotero 7 though. I hope it will be updated or integrated in Zotero itself as it is really a useful plugin.

    Another solution is enabling pdf thumbnails in windows,

    https://www.winhelponline.com/blog/enable-or-disable-thumbnail-preview-for-pdf-files/?expand_article=1

    Then with thumbnail view, use windows search or everything search or any other similar program to search for pdf (or any other attachment files) in the Zotero attachment folder (you can open any attached file in Zotero to identify its parent folder or via edit\preferences\advanced\files and folders\data directory locations)

    You can then search for needed file in zotero by copying and pasting its name in Zotero main library search box

    This is not the perfect solution but I hope this helps!
  • Yes, this is a turnaround! Though I think the code for creating a virtual library seems simple, right? I wonder if it could even be written by LLMs.
