Request to adapt Cardiff University Harvard style

Hello!

While proofreading my list of references, I noticed a few small mistakes in the Zotero Cardiff University - Harvard style. I don't know how to change them myself (except manually) and would hugely appreciate it if someone made these small changes to the Zotero style. I always included a link to the Cardiff University guidance.

Report, Document & Website:
When entering an organisation (not first and last name, but just one field), the dot between the name and the year is missing. This is the case for (at least) reports, documents and websites. This is how it currently looks:
Ada Lovelace Institute 2020. Rethinking Data. Changing narratives, practices & regulations. London: Ada Lovelace Institute.
Here is the Cardiff guidance: https://xerte.cardiff.ac.uk/play_4069#page59

Conference paper:
The date of the conference (exact days) and the place of the conference are missing (only the place of publication is given, but sometimes they differ). This is how it currently looks:
Agesilaou, A. and Kyza, E.A. 2021. Empowering Students to be Data Literate: The Design and Implementation of a Learning Environment to Foster Critical Data Literacy. In: de Vries, E., Hod, Y., and Ahn, J. eds. Proceedings of the 15th International Conference of the Learning Sciences - ICLS 2021. Bochum, Germany: International Society of the Learning Sciences, pp. 458–465.
Here is the Cardiff guidance: https://xerte.cardiff.ac.uk/play_4069#page23

Website:
The website title should be in italics, see: https://xerte.cardiff.ac.uk/play_4069#page67

Journal paper:
When no volume and issue are provided (sometimes the case for online journals), there is an extra space between the journal title and the pages (or the dot if no pages are given). This is how it looks:
Fotopoulou, A. 2020. Conceptualising critical data literacies for civil society organisations: agency, care, and social responsibility. Information, Communication & Society , pp. 1–18. doi: 10.1080/1369118X.2020.1716041.
or:
Dalton, C. and Thatcher, J. 2014. What does a critical data studies look like, and why do we care? Society & Space . Available at: https://www.societyandspace.org/articles/what-does-a-critical-data-studies-look-like-and-why-do-we-care [Accessed: 12 May 2020].

Legal text:
The year of the law is not shown and there is no dot after the name of the institution. This is how it currently looks like:
Deutscher Bundestag Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany. Available at: https://www.btg-bestellservice.de/pdf/80201000.pdf [Accessed: 1 November 2022].
Cardiff guidance: https://xerte.cardiff.ac.uk/play_4069#page66

Encyclopedia entries:
The place and the publisher are not shown. This is how it currently looks like:
Freedman, D.A. 2004. Sampling. Lewis-Beck, M., Bryman, A., and Futing Liao, T. eds. The SAGE Encyclopedia of Social Science Research Methods . doi: 10.4135/9781412950589.
Cardiff guidance: https://xerte.cardiff.ac.uk/play_4069#page31

Book part:
When no pages are entered (e.g. online book or forthcoming book), the dot at the end of the reference is missing.
The same is the case when no publisher or pages for conference proceedings are entered.

MANY thanks in advance if someone made these adjustments (future Cardiff Uni students and staff will be thankful!).

We can look at these, thanks for the detailed report, but FWIW, I think the SAGE Encyclopedia of Social Science Methods is better input as a book (and its contents as book sections) -- it is no different than any other edited volume.

    Thanks for reporting these issues.

I've fixed most of them and you can test the new style with this link.
    https://raw.githubusercontent.com/citation-style-language/styles/a513a448aaa1ea0941b09b49a6f5f78cf5184547/cardiff-university-harvard.csl

Can you provide any remaining issues in a numbered list like so?

    1. Item type: book
current output: asdfasdf (real examples, not abstractions)
    required output: asdf.asdf.

That way I can help faster.

By any chance, are these also issues in the Cardiff Vancouver style?
  • Thank you for already fixing quite a lot of the issues! I've tested the new style and these are the remaining issues:

    1. Conference: (exact date and place conference missing)
    Current output:
Aliakbari, M. and Faraji, E. 2011. Basic Principles of Critical Pedagogy. In: Proceedings of the 2nd International Conference on Humanities, Historical and Social Sciences - IPEDR vol.17. Singapore: IACSIT Press, pp. 77–85.
    Required output:

    2. Encyclopedia: (title of encyclopedia now missing)
    Current output:
Barrow, R. 2014. Education, Concept of. Phillips, D. C. ed. Los Angeles: SAGE Publications.
    Required output:
Barrow, R. 2014. Education, Concept of. Phillips, D. C. ed. Encyclopedia of educational theory and philosophy. Los Angeles: SAGE Publications.

    3. Book: (no dot when no pages are given)
    Current output:
Kant, I. 1964. Beantwortung der Frage: Was ist Aufklärung? (1783). In: Weischedel, W. ed. Kants Werke in sechs Bänden. Bd. 6. Schriften zur Anthropologie, Geschichtsphilosophie und Pädagogik. Darmstadt: WBG
    Required output:

    4. Law: (year missing, also in in-text citation)
    Current output:
Deutscher Bundestag. Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany. Available at: https://www.btg-bestellservice.de/pdf/80201000.pdf [Accessed: 1 November 2022].

    Current output (in-text citation):
    (Deutscher Bundestag)
    Required output (in-text citation):

I don't know about the Vancouver style, sorry! I've never used it before.

    Thank you!!

    1. Conference Paper
You'd enter the "Cairo, 21 October, 2011" into the Conference Name field
implemented something. let me know it works.

    2. Encyclopedia

The example from their guidelines clearly shows that they don't want that. https://xerte.cardiff.ac.uk/play_4069#page31

    3. Chapter (not book)

    Fixed

    4: legislation+bill
    fixed

    https://raw.githubusercontent.com/citation-style-language/styles/d960a8484c86773506b3e0e9bc9f8dccfe7b6e6d/cardiff-university-harvard.csl
  • Re 1. @damnation -- the proper way to implement that would be via event-date (which could be added in Extra)

Re 2. @Marsina -- see my note above. Your example is called an encylopedia, but in citation terms it's just a book section.

Re 3. I haven't looked at this super closely, but the report is that the the period at the end of chapters is *missing*, not that it shouldn't be there.
  • Thank you for making these changes!

    1. Conference paper:
Now the same place is given twice but still no exact date:
Aliakbari, M. and Faraji, E. 2011. Basic Principles of Critical Pedagogy. In: Proceedings of the 2nd International Conference on Humanities, Historical and Social Sciences - IPEDR vol.17. Singapore, Singapore: IACSIT Press, pp. 77–85

If I enter "Cairo, 21 October, 2011" in the conference name, the output is the same (because the conference name is not included in the output). If it was included, that might solve the problem.

    2. Encyclopedia entry still looks the same. For my purposes, I'm happy to just enter it as a book section, as adamsmith suggested! I just thought it would be generally good to have it fixed. But if it doesn't work, don't worry about it (at least for me)!

    3. Book section / chapter:
The dot at the end of the citation is still missing when no pages are entered for a book section.

    4. Legislation: fixed, works now! :)

    Thanks!!
  • 1. Did you enter the date into the extra field like so?
    event-date: 01/04/2023

    3. fixed (I had to refactor the style and then forgot the dot...)

    https://raw.githubusercontent.com/citation-style-language/styles/6cbfa69e96784fd9a4e46db84a5e864d838834f0/cardiff-university-harvard.csl
  • 1. This is better, now the exact date is given:
Aliakbari, M. and Faraji, E. 2011. Basic Principles of Critical Pedagogy. In: Proceedings of the 2nd International Conference on Humanities, Historical and Social Sciences - IPEDR vol.17. 21 October 2011, Singapore: IACSIT Press, pp. 77–85.
(I had entered the exact date in the normal date field before)

Just the place (Cairo) missing, but maybe this needs to be added manually.

    3. Correct now! Thanks!
