Zotero won't sync and I cannot update.

I used Zotero this week on my desk top and it's fine. Went to the archives today with my laptop and it would not sync. I got the orange exclamation point icon saying that I needed to update Zotero in order for it to sync. Although I thought Zotero updated automatically, I clicked "Help" and then "check for updates" but nothing happened. I also tried to "check for updates" via the "Tools" tab with no success. I keep getting an error message saying that it cannot update because another version of Zotero is running. But I closed out everything on the computer--even rebooted--so I don't think that's actually the case.
