D1989868261 - Zotero app not syncing with my online library

Debug ID: D1989868261
My Zotero app is not syncing with my online library. I've remove tags and have let it open for a long period of time, but still no luck.
Can you help me with this?
  • I should add - that I know it is this computer. My other computer syncs with the online library
  • The creator name ‘[…]’ is too long to sync. Shorten the name and sync again.

If you receive this message repeatedly for items saved from a particular site, you can report this issue in the Zotero Forums.
You're getting an error about creators, not tags.
  • Yes. The tags was a previous issue. I am getting the message repeatedly, but I"m not sure which database is causing the problem. Is there a way to figure that out (I imported several).
  • edited March 20, 2023
Click the Show Item button if there is one (I can’t remember) or search for the creator in the error message in All Fields & Tags mode.
  • it looks like the problem is coming from my psycinfo records that I exported from OVID.
  • edited March 25, 2023
If you still have it, can you open the export file from Ovid in Notepad and paste in an example record that this is happening for? It would be a bug in their export, but we can see if there's anything we can do about it.
  • Yes. But the record is two long for a single post. So I’m posting in parts.
    30.

N2 - The Instituto Nacional de Neurologia y Neurocirugia "Manuel Velasco Suarez" (INNN) is one of the main institutions in Latin America treating epilepsy; and bibliometric analysis has an increasing role in analyzing the literature, acting as a Google Maps of medical research. We tracked the scientific output in Scopus and the impact of the institution from its foundation to July 2020 in the field of epilepsy. We roughly separated this group by clinical and experimental approach, identifying core journals, type of article, increase with time, and number of citations. A total of 228 papers, from a total of 3,034 produced by the INNN in that period, were found. Additionally, we identified that neurocysticercosis, pharmacology, genetics, and proteins involved in epilepsy were the most investigated topics. Also, there is a sustained growth in the number of papers per year since 1985. The number of authors per paper ranges from one to 15, and neuroscience journals are the preferred target of researchers, with a predilection for "Epilepsy and Behavior". OK, so Ovid is putting the last names of the authors of all of the paper's references into an A2 tag, which is generally used for editors. That's why you're getting a long Editor field with all of those names.

So I'm afraid this is an example of why the current behavior is as it is. This is just an error in the import data. And the simple solutions aren't great:

    1) We could check for multiple commas and automatically turn these into separate Editor fields, but while that wouldn't block syncing, the data would still be wrong, you'd get incorrect references with erroneous editors, and it would be much more annoying to fix, since you'd have to delete 39 extra creator rows instead of 1.

    2) We could automatically truncate the field at 255 characters (the current sync limit), but then if these were valid authors or editors, we'd be throwing away data instead of letting you fix it (e.g., by copying to a text editor, adding newlines, and repasting).

    3) We could allow syncing of long (>255-character), obviously incorrect creator fields, but that would just propagate bad data and potentially performance problems to other synced devices and the web library, for data that needs to be corrected anyway. And there has to be some configured limit when storing data in a database.

Probably the best option would be (4), dealing with this via batch-editing functionality, with a way to select all of these items and delete the Editor field for all of them. Batch editing is planned, but it will take some work to make a usable UI for things like this. We'll see what we can do there for a future version.

For now, your best option is probably to delete all these items (sorting by Date Added if necessary) and use a text editor to delete all the A2 fields in the file in batch, and then repeat the import.

Also note that you shouldn't get this when using the Save to Zotero button, only when exporting raw RIS from the site.
  • @KathieBailey: Actually, I provided some code to deal with this recently. You can select all the affected items and run this code from Tools → Developer → Run JavaScript to delete all the invalid creators:
