Zotero VERY slow

I am having several problems with Zotero.
a) It takes upward of 3-5 min to even open Zotero. Firefox is running fine but when I try to open Zotero everything stops--if I click on Firefox I get a message that it is not responding and after about 3-5 minutes Zotero eventually appears.
b) When I want to enter a citation in Word the search box is REALLY slow=it takes about a minute to type even one word.

I am running Office XP and am using a Dell.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    How many items do you have in your Zotero library?
    It takes upward of 3-5 min to even open Zotero.
    Zotero caches data the first time you open the Zotero pane in a Firefox session. Subsequent opens should be instantaneous. If you have a very large library and/or a slow computer, just be sure to always keep at least one Firefox window open. (This isn't an issue on OS X, where applications generally don't exit automatically when the last window is closed.)

    If you have a very large library, type a " (double quotes) at the beginning of the search to disable find-as-you-type.

    Zotero wouldn't even open--i only had about 2,000 citations. I think i will just delete it all and start over with the old, non-beta version.

    If there's a problem, you'd be helping yourself and others by being a bit patient and working to understand and, if possible, resolve it. There's nothing in Zotero 2.0 that should cause a slowdown—if anything, it should be considerably faster.
