Zotero stopped adding citations and now gives error that cursor needs to be placed inside citation

I've been using Zotero to write a legal article (currently 9 pages and 50 references so nothing too bad atm) and it has been working fine until now. Suddenly, it doesn't seem to insert new citations anymore. I select the source, enter the page, and then it does what it usually does but without actually adding the citation. The weird thing is, when I make a new Word file, it works, but in my existing file of my article it doesn't. I've even tried copy-pasting my whole article into a new file and then it works again, but as soon as I then save the new file it stops working again. I have the last version of Zotero and have tried restarting it as well as my laptop but nothing works.

Then, suddenly, an additional problem occurred and I couldn't even add a citation by selecting the source etc, but it now immediately gives me the error that I need to place my cursor inside a Zotero citation in order to edit it. The report ID I created is 1158732625. Can you please help me?

Does this happen in a new, empty document?

If not, see Troubleshooting Errors in Word Processor Documents for the existing document.

You'll want to make sure you're saving the file as a .docx and saving it to your local disk, not to OneDrive (unless you remove spaces from the filename, as mentioned on the linked page).
