Is there a way to change an item's type?

Apologies if this is somewhere in the documentation, but is it possible to change the type of an item while maintaining what metadata I can? For instance, could I change a Journal Article into a Document and have the information carry over, or is the best way to simply create a new Document and manually copy/paste the information?

Of course — click the item type at the top of the item pane and choose from the drop-down list.
