Having Zotero latest version on a Mac leads to safari loading very slow on opening

edited February 17, 2023
Zotero Safari connector is bundled with the app on Mac. Not a tech person, but simply *having* Zotero installed led to Safari loading very slowly, even when the extension is *DISABLED*. Throwing Zotero to Trash leds to Safari loading properly; again, putting it back, Safari opens slowly. I asked around on Reddit and was informed about some change from Feb 7th which might have led to this issue happening.

Find the lag in either of the videos: https://imgur.com/a/gJcJV5y.

Not completely sure about this, but flagging it for the devs, if there is anything.

  • What macOS version? Have you previously used the Zotero Connector in Safari? Is the Zotero Connector enabled in the Extensions pane of the Safari preferences?

Assuming you previously enabled the extension, see https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/safari_compatibility#can_t_see_the_save_button_save_button_flickering for a step you sometimes have to follow to re-enable the extension after a Zotero upgrade, due to a macOS bug. (We haven't seen this kind of slowdown before, though.)

(Also, don't ask for Zotero help on Reddit. Nothing happened on Feb 7th. These forums are where to post if you want accurate information on Zotero.)
  • +1, same problem
  • probably linked to that my safari reliably crashes when opening Zotero. is there any way to just completely nuke the safari extension?
