Highlight text function while placing citation in writing

I don't remember if me got Highlight text function along with Zotero installation, or rather was it some of installed plugins. Never mind, I wonder if Highlight text is automating - in any extent - the proces of placing citation in one's writing, rather than being an quite isolated function - for latter case user can use H.T. visually/manual only. How does that work?
Please consider two cases:
Writing is edited in word processor
Writing is being composed in LaTeX.
