Zotero - unusable on Macbook?

Because I'm on the go lately, I'm doing most of my academic work on my macbook pro.

Yet, Zotero somehow became (or always was, I might have just forgot) quite unusable to me. The loading times are immense. My workflow is completely broken everytime I have to use zotero since flipping a page in a paper is usually followed by a 10-15 second lag (with the colourful Macbook wheel spinning).

It is even worse when I try to open a new paper. Just now, it took 45 seconds just to open it up.

Is there anyway this can be fixed? Do I need to set it up new? I really like working with Zotero but with this performance it is really hard to use.
  • That's obviously not a normal experience or else no one would use Zotero, which millions of people do.

Is this only with specific PDFs? If you're trying to open a large PDF with huge scanned images, the performance may not be great (in Zotero or various other PDF readers, such as those in web browsers). In such a case, you may want to reprocess the file in Acrobat to make the images a more reasonable size.

The next major version of Zotero will be much faster, particularly on Apple Silicon, but most PDFs should load perfectly fine in the current version.
  • I've used Zotero on a Macbook for years (currently a fairly outdated 2017 version) and it's always worked like a charm, so I doubt it has anything to do with the machine itself...
