Updating the Vancouver style with DOI

I would be grateful if the standard Vancouver style in Zotero could be updated to include DOI information as standard. At present, information in the doi-field is not included. The correct way seems to be to include 'doi:10....' at the end of the reference, as stated in https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK7265/. Only a few journal specific Vancouver styles handles this correctly, but many of them have other issues. The Elsevier-Vancouver style is close, but uses preface 'https://doi.org' instead of just 'doi:' (in reference to earlier forum discussions).
  • No, I don't think that's right. There's one single example of an article with DOI in Citing Medicine -- together with countless other variants of what one could add. The standard article citation at the beginning of chapter 1 is without DOI. Almost all the citations given as examples without DOI have DOIs, so could include it.

And while NLM may not have updated the DOI format, Elsevier is right about how they want DOIs: The DOI foundation, CrossRef, and DataCite have all moved away from the doi: format for DOIs and now recommend using the URL form (which is also what all more frequently updated citation styles have moved to requiring).
  • Thank you for your comment, I will still argue that the guide states quite clearly how DOI should be added for articles, books etc, so I find it strange that the Zotero Vancouver style should not follow these guidelines. On the other hand, I do agree that this is an outdated practice, and that the Elsevier style is probably to be preferred.
