When I save the word file, other devices can't check my citations and references

I use microsoft 365, and save as docx.
When I open my files on my pc, I can check everything. But after a save the file and send, other people can't check any citations and references.

Am I doing something wrong?

What exactly do you mean by "check" citations? What are they not able to do?
And they're also using Word?
