San Francisco Estuary & Watershed Science reference format

Any SFEWS authors with a style recommendation? There's a Zotero style developed for SFEWS that's close, but still a ways off. Surely there's something else out there that'd get me closer. Thanks!
  • Tell us what the issues are and we'll get it fixed for all future authors.

I've done my best to identify all of the issues but I'm not sure how best provide them all at the necessary level of detail. What works for a journal article available electronically OR in print doesn't also work for a journal article available ONLY electronically; similarly, there are issues peculiar to Federal Register entries, book chapters and technical reports. Is there a way to share a MS Word document with example references, corrected to show what's missing or in error? Otherwise, here's a list:
    • journal titles should be abbreviated
    • access dates and doi (or url) included for all reference types
    • journal data should include issue number (e.g., Cordoleani et al. 2020 San Franc Estuary Watershed Sci. [accessed 2020 Dec 14];18(4).)
    • tech reports should include institution, report type, report number, page count, and “Available from:” with url following
    • book chapters or sections should include the editor(s)
    • federal register entry text citation should be abbreviated (Fed Regist 2005)
    • federal register entry should include date of the ruling, and “Available from:” with url following
    • database should include url for access
    • note that “NOAA” (acronym for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) somehow became “United States NO and AA”.

Thanks! I really appreciate the help...Pete

[edited to add] There are a couple key features that appear to have gone missing in the most recent update to Zotero, especially the loss(?) of the ability to include the editor(s) for a book with chapters or sections by different authors.
  • An updated version is here: https://github.com/citation-style-language/styles/raw/2d304a344f8dd04df4c8f990117e51d990caff3c/san-francisco-estuary-and-watershed-science.csl

Some of the issues you mention are unclear, though.

How do you enter Federal Register? They don't have an item type in Zotero (and I wouldn't necessarily expect them to work super well if they deviate from journal).
note that “NOAA” (acronym for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) somehow became “United States NO and AA”.
This is a problem in your metadata. Check how you've entered that item in Zotero.

There have not been any metadata related changes (except for the addition of the Preprint item type) in Zotero at all for years. The way to add chapters from edited volumes has always been the same: https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/edited_volumes_and_book_chapters

  • Thanks Adam...I'll try the updated style. I think my biggest hoped-for improvement would be consistent inclusion of the "[accessed 2022 Dec 28]" and a url to a source for the reference.

Is it realistic to think that the style could default to the DOI field for the source url (ie http://doi.org/1.000.10.xxxx) but draw from the url field if the first is blank?

The Federal Register entries are few in my work, thankfully, so that's not a big issue and I'll check my formatting for NOAA authorship as you suggest.

The updated style doesn't look like it's doing that, but it's very much feasible, yes, and I see it in the guidelines -- @damnation do you mind adding that?
(You'll have to check "Include URL" in the Cite Tab of the Zotero preferences for this to work, though).
