Zotfile: option to specify invalid filename characters

edited December 20, 2022
I've recently had to spend an extraordinary amount of time debugging constant > 100% CPU use of my OneDrive client with the help of Microsoft support. One reason was that cloud storage services such as OneDrive have restrictions on the characters that can be used in filenames: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/restrictions-and-limitations-in-onedrive-and-sharepoint-64883a5d-228e-48f5-b3d2-eb39e07630fa#invalidfilefoldernames

Zotero PDFs that were renamed by Zotfile and had, for example, a ' " ' in the name, had this problem.

Is there an option in Zotfile to specify which characters are invalid and shouldn't be used, and how they should be replaced ? If not, could one be made ?

I have also posted this on Zotfile's GitHub page: https://github.com/jlegewie/zotfile/issues/639
  • There's nothing built in ZotFile, though you can do basically anything using custom wildcards. It's also not a very actively maintained add-on, so I wouldn't necessarily expect any new features to land.

That said, if you just need ZotFile to move files and don't need the fine-tuned naming conventions, if you set it to using Zotero to rename, that will strip out most special characters, including "

  • Thanks! Using Zotero to rename is possible for me.
