Expanding the citations to be able to delete a specific one

Following a given journal format, my references in the text look like [1-5], instead of [1][2][3][4][5]. I want to remove reference [3], for example. How can I expand [1-5] to be able to select the reference [3] and delete it?

I forgot to mention that I'm using Mac OS and Microsoft Word (but I assume the answer is likely to be quite general)

Move your cursor into the citation and select "add edit citation" in the Zotero Word add-on, then remove the citation in question in the citation bar.
